In an interview with the Sun last year, Trump declared, “You know a poll just came out, I’m the most popular person in the history of the Republican party”, he said. “Beating Lincoln, I beat our Honest Abe”.
As outlandishly arrogant as those statements seemed last year, Trump seems to have a reasonable argument to make according to this latest poll. Not only did Trump’s favorability eclipse Lincoln, but his popularity among other Republican presidents was also higher.
Among Republicans, 71 percent say they prefer Trump over George Bush and George HW Bush. A gargantuan 86 percent say they prefer Trump over Richard M Nixon, who was infamously embroiled in the Watergate Hotel scandal. And 65 percent of Republicans prefer Trump over Gerald Ford.
To anyone who is politically astute, or better yet sane. These numbers seem horrific while revealing a much deeper truth among the Republican party. Trump’s support is not just political, it’s downright cult-like. He has an unwavering amount of support than cannot be swayed by common sense or logic. And to the man who once declared he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and still not lose his loyalists, sadly, he was right. Trump supporters are not only drinking the kool-aid, but they’ve also made cagers of it.
